From what I have been told by Engineering Managers it is hard to find
good software engineers. For this reason referrals are highly
valued...
I was aware that Polycom Westminster had been hiring in a number of
different areas. Our corporate office is in Milpitas, CA (Silicon
Valley) and the external website funnels traffic through the corporate
office (a.k.a the black hole). Last March I read about the
Thirstdays events in the Boulder Daily Camera. They sounded interesting
so I checked for openings at the Polycom Westminster office.
There were a number of them including several software engineering
positions. I then attended my first Thirstdays event that I think
was at the Rio Grande. I networked with a number of individuals
letting them know Polycom was hiring and if they weren’t personally
interested perhaps they knew someone who was interested.
One of the contacts I made forwarded my name to a software engineer
living in Lafayette. When I spoke to him, he told me he had been
interested in working for Polycom for a while but when he tried to
apply for positions using the external corporate website but they never
seemed to go anywhere. He sent me his resume which I screened
against the job responsibilities and then forwarded to HR. He was
interviewed and hired. I received a hiring bonus and bought
myself a great new bicycle.
I have received other resumes both directly and indirectly since and
have held on to them. When positions I feel are good matches open
up I check with the folks whose resumes I have on file and then submit
them as appropriate. The HR personnel and other managers in my
office
know I attend the Thirstdays networking events and now proactively
inform me of new positions they are trying to fill. Please check the
Job & Resumes section of the Thirstdays website or click on the
link below for information on current employment opportunities at
Polycom.
