PEMBA SHERPA

Pemba
Pemba Sherpa grew up in the Everest region of Nepal, in a picturesque hillside village of stone houses calledSewangma. As a child, Pemba lived without the modern-day conveniences of electricity, plumbing, running water or roads. At 15, he began working in the Himalayan tourism industry, starting first as a porter, then later as a professional mountain guide . After several years of full time guiding, he developed a curiosity for the West, which he finally satisfied with a visit to the US in 1991. After seeing the mountains of Colorado, Pemba found his home away from home and has lived here ever since. In an effort to reestablish contact with his home country, he started an adventure guiding company, Sherpa Ascent International (SAI). Since 1991, Pemba has returned to Nepal for trekking, climbing (he has been to 20,000 ft + over 25 times), and volunteer service over 20 times. He has had the pleasure of guiding over 400 visitors in his beloved "Himalayan Kingdom". Pemba avidly supports the building of schools, bridges, setting up medical clinics, and giving of scholarships to better the lives of Sherpa children.

SHERPA ASCENT INTERNATIONAL

Founded by Pemba in 1994, Sherpa Ascent International has led numerous annual trips ranging from major expeditions climbs, treks & mountain biking adventures in the Himalayas to excursions and instructive classes in the mountains of the US. Sherpa Ascent aims to introduce not only the obvious physical beauty of Nepal, but its spiritual & cultural treasurers as well. Pemba continues to share his homeland (as well as other exotic locations) with others, if you are looking for an adventure feel free to pick up a brochure in our library or contact him here.

SHERPA'S ADVENTURERS RESTAURANT & BAR

Namaste. Thanks for coming in. We opened our doors in late September of 2002 with a unique approach to the restaurant business. From our love for good Himalayan cuisine (and the talents of our great chefs), our personal affinity for the culture, passion for the mountains, cold beer & education, Sherpa's was born.

As the name implies, there are genuine Sherpas from the Himalaya here to bring a little of Nepal & Tibet to Boulder. In addition to great food & atmosphere, we offer a truly unique "traveler's lounge" with plenty of books to help get you started planning your next (or better yet first) adventure. Keep an eye out for our list of guest speakers and slide shows. If experiencing the Himalayas (or Thailand, Africa, or South America for that matter) appeals to you - you're in the right place. Sherpa's is the place to re-live the glories of past adventures and plan new ones. We would be happy to help you plan a wide range of travel adventures from major Himalayan Expeditions and Volunteer Medical & Non-Medical trips to casual treks and mountain biking excursions. Let us know if you are interested, we can book them right here everyday.

Thanks again. We hope Sherpa's provides all we intend - good food, cold beer, a little inspiration, a little education and escape to the Himalayas - all without leaving the shadow of the Flat Irons.

THE HIMALAYAN KINGDOM OF NEPAL

Home to Sagarmatha (Mount Everest), Nepal is dominated by the world's most imposing mountains. While the country is relatively small (roughly the size of Florida), it holds three distinct geographic regions stretching from east to west across the country. The southern most strip includes lowland jungle , rhinos & tigers of the Teri and is home to the Ganges River. Here agriculture is the rule. The mid-section is that of the Himalayan Foothills, the Kathmandu Valley and the bulk of Nepal's population. The northern portion of the country holds 8 of the 10 highest mountains in the world with Tibet across its border.

Known by some as the "Florence of the East" for it's incredible artwork, the country's capital, Kathmandu, lies at a comfortable elevation of 4383 ft allowing for relatively mild weather even in winter. The people of Nepal have migrated here since the 9th century AD. Coming primarily from Tibet &India, the resulting ethnic groups are unlike anywhere else in the world. Generally speaking this complex culture can be divided into the Indo-Aryans of the south, the Mongolian people; including the Rai, Limbu, Tamang, Gurung and Magar clans who cultivate the steep slopes of the middle hills, and the Tibetan groups of which the Sherpas are best known. No less than 36 languages are spoken with as many ethnic groups represented. The universal language is Nepali, which is similar to the Northern Indian languages of Hindi and Bengali, both of which are derived from ancient Sanskrit.

Nepal as a culture thrives on religion. While smatterings of Muslim and Christianity exist, over 95% of the population is either Hindu or Buddhist. But this statistic is somewhat deceiving as many people in the middle hills celebrate a mixture of both religions. This unique mixture has resulted in a tolerance between religious and ethnic groups that, along with its incredible scenery, has made Nepal such a popular destination and a one -of-a-kind travel experience.

Nepal is a paradise for geologists, anthropologists, art lovers, religious pilgrims, photographers, birdwatchers, rafters, trekkers, climbers, or anyone with an adventurous streak. Whether venturing into the Teri for an elephant-back safari, touring ancient cities, trekking through remote villages, visiting Buddhist monasteries, bartering in the markets of Kathmandu or testing oneself on the world's highest mountains, Nepal is an experience that will never be forgotten.

The place to re-live the glories of past adventures and plan new ones….
